Work Process

Clay preparation & Shaping
In order to remove air bubbles and provide even moisture distribution, which is important for preventing cracks later on, artisans knead or wedge the clay. To eliminate all air from the clay body, a vacuum machine or manual wedging is used.

Drying, refining & decorating
The clay hardens and loses all of its moisture during this period, making it more durable but yet brittle enough to be further polished.
The bone-dry stage is the last drying step before the item is prepared for the kiln. We improve the sculpture by adding details, smoothing edges, or making little changes to the form before firing.
At this point or following the initial fire (bisque firing), decorations like underglazes are applied to the clay body.

Firing in the kiln
The initial firing hardens the clay, removes remaining moisture, and increases its durability so that it may be handled for glazing. To make the fired item transparent, waterproof, and frequently colorful, a glaze is applied. To melt the glaze and permanently glue it to the ceramic body, the item is fired another time. The temperature and duration of the firing process are carefully regulated to ensure that the glaze matures properly and to avoid warping and breaking.
